CATW @ CSW63: Addressing Demand, Preventing Sex Trafficking

During the 63rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women in March, we teamed up with the OSCE Office for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, UNODC, OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Equality Now, A Call to Men and Mentari for a side event discussing states’ obligations to address demand under international law. The panel specifically considered governments’ commitments to enact demand reduction policies and educational measures upon ratifying the UN Trafficking in Persons Protocol (also known as the Palermo Protocol). Panelists made the connection between sex trafficking and its end-point, the sex trade, clear, and addressed how and why end demand policies prevent the sex trafficking of women and girls.
