In July-August, 2002, the Center for Women Studies (Pusat Studi Wanita/PSW) of the State Institute of Islamic Studies (Institut Agama Islam Negeri/IAIN) sponsored a five-week course on Islam, Gender and Reproductive Rights. Organized by Siti Ruhaini Dzuhayatin, Director of the Center for Women’s Studies, and CATW’s representative in Indonesia, this landmark course provided participants from Southeast Asia with a broader understanding of Islamic values and teachings related to gender, sexuality and reproductive rights, and analyzed Islamic understandings from a woman-centered perspective.
